watercolor florals with Altenew paints...

  Hello my fabulous friends,

and welcome to all who are new!

Yesterday I was struggling... Feeling drained from a series of stressful weeks, I just didn't feel any creative spark.

As I was scrolling through Instagram, I saw a post about the new Altenew Pair-a-Flower contest involving watercolors and flowers.  It was just the push I needed to pick up the brush and create something just for fun...

While painting flowers is nothing new for me, this particular paint palette is far less familiar. You may have seen some of my recent posts where I've been exploring these paints (like this one). While I've spent quite a bit of time playing with these paints, and testing them, I'm still learning each color's individual personality... Which ones are the "bullies"(which colors are really strong and easily over power a mix), which color neutralize each other best, which ones push mixes in unexpected ways... You know, all the important things to really understand if you want to mix colors intuitively like I do.

Pretty much every color I used in this card is a custom mix to create the colors that I wanted instead of simply using the colors provided. The pink was too bright, so I pulled it back with some green... then added in some blue for a deeper cool shadow color. The leaves were too yellow, so I added some blues and pinks from the flowers... You get the idea.

To be honest, I couldn't list all the colors I used... because I made a bunch of mixes using a variety of colors. I find the exploration of colors fascinating and possibly even more therapeutic than doing the actual painting.

To finish it off, I added in some pink... but it still needed that little something extra, so I pulled out one of my gold paints and added some splatters of gold.

I wasn't able to film this painting since I wasn't in my studio, but if there is interest, I can a video using these paints... so let me know if you are interested!

I'll be back with more soon... see you then!
