sunset on water...

I didn't have a boat to put this cute little guy on, so I decided that he would be looking through a window at the water and pretending he is sailing away into the sunset...

I had so much fun coloring this elephant! Actually, all the stamps in the LLLC Best Mates stamp set are ADORABLE!!!

I wanted a strong light to be coming from the setting sun, so I went with deep shadows on his back side, and very light highlights on his front... I even added a little light orange (YR000) glow to the edges of his skin that is closest to the sun...

I loved this sentiment, but it didn't fit in the banner.. And I wanted more dimension in that corner anyway, so I stamped the top line of the sentiment on one banner and the bottom line of the sentiment on a slightly longer banner... When layered together you get the whole sentiment!

I had tons of fun creating the sky! I knew what I wanted, but I wasn't sure exactly how to get what I saw in my head onto my paper.. so it took some experimenting... Which I love to do, so I'm not complaining!

I wanted the sunset to be reflecting in the water, so I colored all my wave tops with the same colors as  the sky, and tucked my sun halfway underneath the waves so it looks like a reflection.

Let's take a look at how the background was created....

I started out by choosing my sky blend... Now, we're not actually blending the colors, so you don't have to get too worried about which marker will blend with what... Just pick a red, orange, and yellow that seem to flow nicely into each other... You can add more colors or shades if you want.. whatever your heart desires!

I then used the torn edge of a paper towel and a Copic Airbrush System to create my clouds. I started at the top with my yellow, and airbrushed right along the edge of the paper towel using the paper towel as a mask... I then moved the paper towel down and over to shift the edge and sprayed along the edge again.. Keep moving down and spraying.. For more interest, flip the towel over  or tear more than one towel so you have lots of edge shapes to choose from! After all, clouds aren't uniform!

I first learned about using a torn paper towel as a mask from Jennifer Dove... She is an AMAZING Copic artist!

To change colors, I started with a lights spray of my second color OVER the normal spray of the first color for a cloud or two... then continued working as before with the new color.. Try to keep your color change gradual instead of in a harsh line across the sky...

My best advice is to practice on some scratch paper until you are comfortable with the color gradation.

Once I had my sky in I figured out where I wanted the top of my water to be... I'm using the Sea Bubbles Border die as my wave tops... because, let's face it, it's my current favorite for water! LOL!

It's ok if the bottom of your sky goes into your water.. those colors would be reflected in the water anyway!

After determining where I wanted my water line, I used the negative from my Sea Bubbles Border to create a mask. (you know, that piece of paper you have left over AFTER you cut out your border... it has the outline of your die, but no inner details, which is perfect!)

I airbrushed in a variety of blues and blue-greens until I liked how it was looking...

Then add a sun (Stitched Nested Circle die 3rd smallest circle), and the colored Sea Bubbles Border.. The top one fits right into the shape we airbrushed for the water!

I even added some Perfect Pearls onto the Sea Bubbles Borders to give them some shimmer!

Creating sunsets is TONS of fun! I hope you give it a try!

See you soon!
