magical birthday...

Hello my fabulous friends!

I realized that my nephew's birthday is just a few days away... YIKES!

My goal over the past couple of years has been to have birthday cards done a month in advance.... that way I'm never stuck in a pickle trying to get something made at the last second.

However, things have been a bit crazy this past month, and every time I sat down to make this card, something would come up and it didn't get made..

But now it's crunch time, so I got up SUPER early in the morning and got this baby ready to mail!

I colored this little guy earlier this month as part of the #thedailymarker30day coloring challenge. I used Fadeout ink to stamp him, then colored him with Copics.

I used a variety of blue Distress inks to create a blended background. I knew about where I wanted my dragon to stand, so I left that area the lightest, and created a vignette around that.

I then mixed some Lindy's Stamp Gang Magicals with water and flicked to across the background to create sparkly splatters.

If you aren't familiar with Lindy's Magicals, they are a highly pigmented powder with mica.. When mixed with water, or other wet mediums (paste, gel, etc) you get BEAUTIFUL results!!!

For my sentiment, I heat embossed the smaller words, but I wanted "Magical" to really pop, so I stamped with the Magicals.

To do this, you want to start with a dry paper. Any wet ink or finger smudges on your paper will cause problems. Rub down the paper with anti-static powder (yes, this is important. The pigment powder and shimmer like to cling even more than embossing powder, and it WILL react with any moisture.)

Once the surface is prepped, stamp the word with VersaMark ink. Then brush the dry Magicals powder over the wet ink. Brush off any excess powder that is not stuck to the ink.

At this point, it's sparkly, but not super impressive.. The magic happens when you get it wet... HOWEVER.. Because we don't want to lose the crisp details of our stamped lines, we can't really get it WET.. instead, a very LIGHT mist of water will do. I generally mist the water into the air, then waft my paper through it.

The mist makes the Magicals POP!

To finish off the card, I created a topper using a fancy edge die, a stencil, and more Magicals splatters.

I haven't played with Magicals in a long time.. I had forgotten just how fun they are! I'm going to have to start pulling them out more!

What crafting supplies have you "forgotten" about that would be fun to start using again?

See you soon!
